Algorithm HW

The algorithm that i will be discussing is the Facebook algorithm and how it is creating ads that are discriminating. Facebook usually shows ads to users geared towards based on their demographic. The group that is specifically harmed by this algorithm are women and racial minorities. The harm being done would be classified as racism, discrimination, sexism and gender inequality. Ads would display job openings for careers of preschool teachers, secretaries which are both usually considered stereotypical careers for women, were shown more frequently towards Facebook users that were women. Whereas blue collar jobs such as taxi drivers, janitors were shown more towards Facebook users that were minorities. When it came to real estate ads, ads about Homes being for sale were shown more frequently towards Facebook users that were White and Rental ads were shown more towards minorities.

the company took responsibility by basically having one of their spokesman announce that Facebook were going to make several changes to the ad algorithm so that it wouldn't be offensive and discriminate.

I'm a bit confused on the question but i would assume that the algorithm that hasn't been updated to keep up with the changing world of today. Because it was probably coded by people who do not realize that women and minorities do not do one certain of career path and some minorities own homes rather then rent.
